The 2000-huor
Shiatsupractor® Diploma Program has a 1-2 year Full-time. Students
participate 2000 hours of instructed and uninstructed independent study
and clinical experience in Shiatsu treatment. The program is composed
of the basic medical science including anatomy, physiology and
pathology, clinical disciplines, Japanese disciplines, Shiatsu lecture
disciplines and Shiatsu practicum disciplines. In the Shiatsu practicum
disciplines, students participate in outside activities in order to
gain valuable clinical experiences in working with the public
and health related communities. Upon successful completion of the
program, students will be eligible to apply to the Canadian Shiatsu
Society of BC for Shiatsupractor / SPR status and to
apply to the International Shiatsu Association and the Japan Shiatsu
Association for the membership. Also students will be
eligible to write the Washington State Massage Board Exam for Licensed
Massage Practitioner / L.M.P. status in the US.

| Basic medical
science |
|
A mastery
of the fundamentals of the structure and function of the body underlies
the development of effective treatment for Shiatsu therapy. This part
of the program is taught during the first year and the total hours of
training in this area will be over 540.

| Anatomy (180
hours) |
|
The
emphasis is on regional and functional anatomy. The course involves
terminology, function and action of all organ systems. Teaching method
is lecture format.
|
| Physiology (180 hours) |
|
This
course provides detailed knowledge of the functional organization and
operational mechanisms employed by cells, tissues, organs and systems.
Teaching method is lecture format.
|
| Pathology (90 hours) |
|
This
course is designed to provide basic knowledge of disease state and
pathological conditions for health care providers. The students will be
able to identify the incidence, etiology and clinical course of
selected disease entities. Teaching method is lecture format.

of the program provides basic knowledge and education in health care.

| Kinesiology (90 hours) |
|
Our
Kinesiology course is a basic synergistic combination of the sciences
of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and exercise physiology. We will
integrate the resulting principles with theories of motor learning and
motor control as applied to transitional activities.

| Nutrition (63 hours) |
|
This
course provides basic knowledge in physiological roles of
carbohydrates, lipids, protein, minerals and vitamins in disease
prevention and enhancement of optimal human health.
|
| Psychology -Communication
skills (27 hours) |
|
Optimal
counselling skills are necessary for health care providers. The student
will learn how to conduct a basic patient interview in a clinical
setting and develop skills involved in contact with a patient.
|
| Business & Practice Management -Ethics included (63
hours) |
|
The focus
of this course is development skills in the operation of business after
receiving Shiatsupractor® diploma. The
students will learn skills that contribute to a successful practice and
the basic knowledge and processes to apply for a business license. This
course covers the general business and medico-legal aspects of Shiatsu
practice. Emphasis is put on civil litigation as it relates to medical
malpractice. May cover the topics related to commercial leases,
employment agreements and partnership law.

| Japanese

|
Since
Shiatsu therapy originated from Japan, learning Japanese related matter
to enhance understanding the shiatsu theory and philosophy, since
Shiatsu therapy originated in Japan, these courses will enhance the
students' understanding of Shiatsu theory and philosophy.

| Japanese Culture & Language (27 hours) |
|
This
course provides basic Japanese culture and language to enhance
knowledge and information.
|
| Traditional Medicine /
Kampo (153 hours) |
|
This
course provides knowledge in the Japanese updated Traditional
Chinese Medical theory including Diagnosis, Five Elements, Meridian
Theory and Chinese Herbology, to optimize the practitioner's health
care.

| Shiatsu lecture
discipline |
|
This area
provides the basic technique of shiatsu treatment and advanced
techniques for pathological conditions including Tsubo Shiatsu.
|
| Basic Theory and Practice
(153hours) |
|
Shiatsu
Foundation
Basic Theory - Basic shiatsu concepts are studied
including such subjects as Characteristics of Shiatsu, Shiatsu and
Physiological Functions, Operations of the Hands and Fingers, Kinds of
Pressure Application, and Contraindications to Shiatsu.
Self Shiatsu - Learning self-administered shiatsu
teaches the student basic use of the hands, correct selection of
pressure application methods and all the basic pressure points.
Practicing self-shiatsu can be part of a preventative and
health-conditioning program.
Chair Shiatsu - In this segment, the student
learns 10-minute chair shiatsu treatment as well as 20-minute
chair shiatsu treatment, and practices on each other in the class. This
is the first time students practice shiatsu on someone other than
themselves.
Whole body Treatment - The basic full-body
treatment, which takes 75 to 90 minutes to complete, and includes up to
660 points, is learned and practiced. The full-body treatment is taught
in stages, gradually increasing the duration of time until the complete
treatment is mastered.

| Advanced Theory and Practice (153hours) |
|
Derivative
Shiatsu
Derivative Shiatsu - Various styles of shiatsu which
are derived from the original style taught by Tokujiro Namikoshi are
reviewed. These include Tsubo Shiatsu, Keiraku (Meridian) Shiatsu, Zen
(Ioh kai) Shiatsu, Tao Shiatsu, Oha shiatsu, Macrobiotic Shiatsu and
others.
Tsubo Shiatsu Theory - The underlying theory of the
Tsubo, or pathological reflex point is discussed including the pain
relieving aspects of shiatsu.
Shiatsu for
Pathological Conditions -
Treatments for conditions of the circulatory, nervous, digestive,
respiratory, endocrine, musculoskeletal, urinary and reproductive
systems are studied and practiced.
Research
& Report (70 hours )
CPR & First Aid -
The students learn and receive basic emergency first aid. A certificate
of completion is issued by the Canadian Red Cross.
HIV Workshop - The students are introduced to the
disease processes of HIV and Hepatitis, as well as hygiene regulations
for clinical practice. Use if an automatic blood pressure monitor and a
Glucometer is introduced

Shiatsu
practicum discipline
This area
provides clinical experience with the public. This segment
focuses completely on practicum studies.
Clinical Experience (670 hours ) |

School
Clinic & Field work
Students practice at the CCST and at public events treating patients
under supervision. They develop skills in taking medical history,
treatment planning and Shiatsu techniques. (Prerequisites: the
completion of the Shiatsu Foundation course and passing grade in clinic
entrance written examination and assessment of the full-body treatment).
This practicum is mandatory and essential for the student to complete
our programs.
